It is scheduled for release in mid-2027 and will run apps like WhatsApp and Instagram, letting users switch between ordinary smartphone functions and a protected mode for managing digital assets. The announcement comes as the French hardware wallet maker deals with the fallout from a supply-chain attack on devices sold through a third-party distributor.

Because Atom runs Android, users will be able to install everyday applications, and the device also integrates the AI assistant OpenClaw. It will be manufactured at Ledger’s facility in Vietnam. The design breaks with the industry norm. Hardware wallets have usually been minimalist devices meant to be locked away in a drawer.

The timing is driven by the breach at Malaysian distributor CryptoBilis. Attackers reportedly tampered with devices before they reached customers. Onchain researchers estimated losses of up to $93.2 million across more than 300 wallets, and Tether froze $10 million of USDT tied to the theft. The compromised wallets allegedly contained hidden chips that captured users’ 24-word recovery phrases by reading signals from their screens. Most victims were in Southeast Asia, and Ledger cited research on Wednesday showing no reported loss of funds in Europe.

Ledger says Atom includes countermeasures aimed at this specific attack. They include a protective enclosure around the most sensitive components, sensors that detect attempts to remove the screen or back cover, and tamper-evident packaging. The tamper-detection system has its own battery, so it keeps working even when the device is switched off. A Ledger spokesperson told CoinDesk that the enclosure would block the screen-reader implants used in the recent incident.

Distribution will also tighten. Ledger plans to sell Atom only through its own website at first, rather than through third-party sellers. It has no plans for trade-ins for customers affected by the breach, but has not ruled out future upgrade promotions. Ledger is not the first to try this format. Solana launched its Saga phone in 2023 and the Seeker last year, both with built-in hardware key protection. Ledger is coming at the idea from the other direction, turning a security device into an everyday smartphone.

The open question is whether users will trust a general-purpose device for cold storage after a breach that exploited the hardware itself. With launch roughly 18 months away, how Ledger handles CryptoBilis victims will likely shape demand more than Atom’s feature list.

Ledger is developing a new device called Atom.
