The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning to US cryptocurrency users about a surge in impersonation scams. Scammers are posing as employees of cryptocurrency exchanges, creating a false sense of urgency to trick users into providing account access information.
In a recent post on social media platform X, the FBI alerted the public, stating, “The FBI is warning of scammers impersonating cryptocurrency exchange employees to steal your money! If you have been a victim of this scam, report the activity associated with it.”
The FBI explained that these scammers often initiate contact through unsolicited calls or messages, claiming there is an issue with the victim’s account or suggesting that someone is attempting to compromise it. To “protect” their account, victims are pressured into providing login details, clicking on phishing links, or sharing personal identification information. Once the scammers obtain this information, they can access and steal funds from the victims’ accounts.
The FBI advises users who receive such messages or calls not to respond, even if the communication appears official or urgent. Instead, users should contact their exchange through official channels to verify any issues. The FBI also emphasized the importance of never sharing sensitive account information.
Victims of these scams are encouraged to report the incidents to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at [www.ic3.gov](http://www.ic3.gov). The agency also requests victims provide any transaction details associated with the scam to aid in the investigation.
